This level is designed for those who are brand new to italian, studying the language formally for the first time, and/or for those who would like to strengthen whatever limited exposure to the language they have had in the past. Their vocabulary and understanding of the language is restricted to perhaps a few key words and expressions, and they do not really have an idea about the grammar or how to use it in context.
Upon completing the ‘Breakthrough' stage, a typical student should be able to:

use very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type

ask and answer questions about personal details such as: where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has
